Our Bus Conversion Page

Introducing, ....The Enchanted Gypsy

Recently my husband,Moss and I purchased a diesel school bus.We will be converting it into a beautiful home on wheels, one that we hope will live up to it's magikal name,The Enchanted Gypsy. It is named after a song by my favorite singer songwriter, Donovan. The bus is a 38 foot International with a 9.0L diesel engine. It used to belong to a driver training school and just 30 driving hours ago the engine was completely rebuilt. The transmission was rebuilt in 2001. We got it for only 1,500 because the driving school didn't need it and it was taking up expensive garage space in Brooklyn New York.

Here are some of the things we have planned for it,

- Diesel engine converted to run off of used vegetable oil. .
- Propane stove, oven ,fridge, hot water heater
- Bathtub with shower,composting toilet
- Wood stove
- Hard wood floors and tongue and groove paneling/cabinets.
- Full solar capability
- Color T.V and VCR
- Two custom built aviaries for our bird friends.
- Kitchen sink, counter, dinette that folds into bed
- Small bedroom area and workshop.

Here is how the bus looks at present.Obviously
we have our work cut out for us.The first order
of business is to paint it some nice color.

Yes,that's right,I did say used vegetable oil. Most folks do not realize that the inventor of the diesel engine made it to run off of veggie oil.Commercially this is known as Biodiesel. What many also do not know is that, with a few modifications, you can also use used veggie oil .Much of it can be obtained for free from restaurants that usually pay to dispose of it. It is environmentally friendly and causes very little air pollution. The gas mileage is no different than with diesel and it does not harm the engine in any way.Check out the links page for more info about this fascinating and gentle fuel.

We begin work on our bus in September. When finished, we will be living in it on the road, going to art festivals and fairs, selling my sculptures and my husband's new C.D. .Our goal is to make it fully self contained for extended periods of "boondocking", also known as camping in one place for a long while without amenities.

Check back periodically as I will be updating the site with photos as the conversion comes along.
